TNS NO WAIT

A friend of mine just says he increased performance of some app stuff by about 30% by setting the TNS_NO_WAIT (sp?) parameter to true.. Sybase has something similar to this that will stop buffering that goes on. The trade off seems to be that you may incur more network traffic..
Any thoughts on possible trade-offs of this parameter or things to look out for?
