Home -> Community -> Usenet -> c.d.o.server -> ALERT: Be *VERY* carefull when using DBA STUDIO 8.1.6
I just hope that this very aggressive move towards Java doesn't bring Oracle crushing down. In theory it all sounds good--open source, free, platform independence, one set of source code, standard look and feel, <yawn> blah blah blah. But I still have to see it working flawlessly. To put very simply, it is still an emulator running on top of an operating system. Has been tried for decades and will be tried for decades. Anyway, this is not to draw flames from Java enthusiates, this is to alert you from bugs in one of Oracle's very important tools that ships with 8.1.6.
I am running Oracle Enterprise 8.1.6 under Windows 2000 Professional. PIII600, 256MB RAM. I won't even begin to mention the headaches I get from Oracle's Java based tools. e.g. DBA Studio fails to start every time (I either have to keep trying or to keep killing the "goddamn" JREW in task list). For example, first time when machine starts, it fires up fine. From that point on , if you exit from it and restart, cross your fingers...you may have a little juggling to do. Scroll bar running out in tree view while there is still stuff that you are trying to get to. So on and so forth.
Anyway, the most serious BUG that I have seen is when in the DBA Studio tree view, the child nodes don't show the items for the table in question. For example: I was working on Table X and in the Triggers folder under X, I was seeing Triggers for table Y. Obviously a programmer error when building the TreeView based on the values retreived from DB, or most probably a Java error which is not passing the correct info about the object which the click was registered on.
Java is slow.... I hope it dies a sudden death.... Or gets improved.... But I also hope that Oracle doesn't go down with it.... Eventhough I am begining to see the end. 7.3 was the best version they put out. Now trying to be everything---directory service, file system, webserver, application server---all based on same core. God save the queen!
