I'm not sure why they told you that you can't compress a backup file. We do it all the time, especially for hot backups. Utilities like GZIP (and GUNZIP) have been tested in the field and put through their paces. Also, if you are exporting a system that's going to create an export file larger than 2GBytes, then on many Unix systems you pipe the export directly to a compress utility.
