You must not install Oracle8i and OAS407 in the same Oracle home. If you want to be able to have both working, install them in two separate Oracle Home. Then patch the database server and application server. U'll also have to modify the "ps" command. (new file with a few options calling the rela one). Oracle Application Server use some old functions of "ps", in a result, when you start oas, you won't be able to stop it (ps do not see the process)
As for having oas talking to 8i, it won't be easy. Try connecting from the oas user via sqlplus. At this point, even patched i did not manage to do this. I had to install a "fresh" (coming from the 8i cd) version of sqlplus and net*8 on top of the oas former one. then i was able to talk to 8i from the oas user. and to start my webservers. But still unable to create a DAD.
