Describe failure using sqlplus

Hi,

We recently installed Oracle8 and created the database instance.

Using sqlplus , i am not able to do a describe on any object which is existing in the database. I am able to retrieve data by running a select statement.

I would like to know if i am missing anything here. During create database, we ran CATALOG.SQL AND CATPROC.SQL scripts.

Please let me know the solution.
