I think the biggest disadvantage is that it allows for uncontrolled growth. The max extent error is really a big warning sign saying your sizing was way off or an application piece is going out of control. Like auto-growing data files, unlimited max extents can lull you into not monitor space stats only to find the errors you do eventually see are not so easily fixed.
