Solution1: [HELP] Using Tape for EXPORT operation on Oracle 7/NT/Netware

I believe you are correct Mario, in both Netware and NT the only way to access a tape device is with a program written to the OS-level API. Hence the reason Arcserve and Backup Exec are so prevalent in these environments.

I have been frustrated many times by NT's lack of tape-writing ability! Sorry Philippe!!!

However, what about this scenario (will take longer, however):

Obviously you have disk space available on the NT machine, right? Then run Export on the NT server, connecting to the Netware server's Oracle database (be sure to set ORACLE_SID to the SID on the Netware server), and specify the export file to be located on the NT server. It will be slower due to the over-the-network access, but it will get the job done for you.

Of course, the above scenario assumes that both servers are located on the same LAN, 100bt preferred. Otherwise, if over a WAN, it would simply take FOREVER. If the database sees constant activity, be sure to set CONSISTENT=Y in your export .par file to ensure data integrity. Other factors should be considered as well, of course, depending on your exact situation.
