Hints are in the docs somewhere, though I don't remember where. A really good book on the subject of SQL statement tuning is Guy Harrison's book on the subject, published by Addison-Wesley. I forget the exact title (maybe "SQL Statement Tuning"), but it has a blue & white cover. I have several tuning books, and his is my favorite. He does describe all the hints.
