For Oracle 7 on NT4 there exists a tool called "Oracle Safe Shutdown", which installs itself as a service and will perform a "shutdown immediate" when the OracleService is stopped. This works OK. Try search on the net, I found it there once (under "Oracle for NT user group"). For Oracle8 this has been implemented by Oracle (two Registry parameters ORA_SHUTDOWN + ORA_SHUTDOWN_TIMEOUT).
