I think your remark is very rude and arrogant, and you probably just don't get it.

Whenever we write
select column_name from some_table where ...

an RDBMS is supposed to retrieve the whole column value, not its first 2 characters, no matter what the where clause is. That's basics. That's SQL 100. Steve has built a very clear and simple case, anybody can cut,paste, and see if the issue occurs.
