I'm well aware of this, which is one of the reasons that I intend to use BLOBs. My question was;
1) is the performance difference I'm seeing to be expected and if so, 2) what can I do to improve it.

As I do not require the BLOB locators since I will never access the data directly, it seems that there must be some performance gain to be had if I can tell Oracle not to try to return them.
