Amen to that!! I occasionally get on a soapbox about developing the capability to test scenarios and answer questions for one's own benefit.

< stepping on the soapbox >
I always wonder about those questions that we see in various newsgroups of the type "is it possible to do .....". Well try it! Is it possible? The other type of question I see is "will this work". Well try it! Does it work? Another type of question is "what can I use to do ....". Have you looked at the manuals and found out what options you have?

Personally, I feel that the best DBAs are the ones who spend the time trying new things to see what works and what doesn't. They answer as many of the questions as they possibly can. They check all of their sources (including RTFM) before seeking counsel/advice/resolutions from newsgroups, Oracle support, etc.
< slipped off the soapbox and bumped my head :) >

But I also understand that the people who visit these newsgroups all have a very different level of understanding of Oracle and that is exactly what these newsgroups are for, sharing information.

Just my 3.14159265 cents worth,
Brian
