Each Linux distribution has it's own quirks. Red Hat is very popular, but also has more support questions asked in the Linux groups. Does this mean it's more problematic to install? Or just more using it, therefore more posts? dunno...
The best (IMO) way to go is to get a CheapBytes or InfoMagic set of 6 or 8 CDs with at least 3 distributions, RedHat, Slackware and Debian, maybe a few others on the CD set as well. You can then try a few, and if one doesn't install, you have others to try.
The different distributions are different in their installation and included packages. It's the same kernel (versions may differ). Try a few of them.
