Another ORA-24365

I'm attempting to log in to an Oracle 8 instance using a chopped-down client installation of Oracle 7.3.3 (just enough to get SQLPLUS running).

The Oracle 8 instance is using an "ANSI" character set. Oracle 7.3.3 was originally installed on the client machine with the usual (for the U.S.) 7-bit ASCII character set.

I'm also getting the same error as the Java poster of 4/28 when I try to log in:

ORA-24365 character conversion error
