There has been recent talk (can't remember if it's for certain yet) that in 12c Standard Edition, Oracle may decide to lower the number of sockets allowed for SE from 4 to 2. I would suspect with the increasing number of cores on a single chip (socket) you could easily have a multi-node RAC cluster with a decent amount of computing power. Intel has server level chips with 16 and 18 cores. A 4 node cluster with 1 socket each will give you >64 cores which is not too shabby. :)
I personally created a SE cluster for the e-commerce site at my old employer because we didn't (at the time) need any of the EE options and already owned the SE licenses. It's actually a pretty good and robust solution.
