ASMM is a tool for the Lazy DBA.
Without it, the DBA either must configure for worst case load conditions (set it and forget it) and therefore overprovision the computer, the memory, and the init.ora, of the DBA must be prepared to reconfigure whenever there are significant load changes. Many environments experience significant load changes several times a day, and I rarely see DBAs reconfigure even weekly, never mind daily.
For recent versions, it generally does the right thing for a reasonably loaded machine. However, for edge conditions or extreme loads it may make things worse if it predicts and adjusts the wrong way.
But, as with many many Oracle technical configuration questions - it depends.
BTW - I try to be a Lazy DBA when I can.
