Hi Chris,
We are setting the libraries to the tape library, I just did not list it. We had been using TDP as well, but recently switched to Data Domain. The backups are getting there fine, the crosscheck works, old database backups are deleting, so I would suspect the archivelog backups to do the same. They are sticking around though
CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARMS 'BLKSIZE=1048576,SBT_LIBRARY=/dbopt/oracle/11107/lib/libddobk.so,ENV=(STORAGE_UNIT=OracleBoost-Dev,BACKUP_HOST=XXX.XXX.XXX.XX,ORACLE_HOME=/dbopt/oracle/11107)';
Its possible I don't have something configured correctly though
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,
RMAN doesn’t have the capability to delete files from your tape drive by itself; it needs a ‘bridge’ to talk to the tape library.
Do you know what software you are using? We used to use TDP (Tivoli Data Protector) in conjunction with RMAN and that allowed us to properly manage the backups via RMAN. I’d bet your tape vendor has something similar.

Hi Alfredo,
We connect to the catalog each time. Our connection string is as follows.
rman target <username>/<password>_at_<DBNAME> catalog <username>/<password>_at_<CATALOG_NAME>
I cheat when connecting manually though with just
rman target / catalog <username>/<password>_at_<CATALOG_NAME>

Any difference in how you are connecting to RMAN (catalog versus control file) in your scheduled backup jobs versus manually?

Hi Alfredo,
I only run the following crosscheck commands on a schedule as part of the script:
crosscheck archivelog all;
crosscheck backup device type disk;
I just ran a manual "crosscheck backup device type sbt_tape;" now. Everything came back as available and it didn't change the obsolete info at all.
Thanks,
Mike

Are you performing a crosscheck at any point?

I am trying to figure out why my rman archivelog backups to tape are not getting removed. This worked correctly at some point, so I am not sure if it was when we changed scripts or version changes with oracle that I did not catch at the time. This example is for an 11.1.0.7 instance which was created recently, but we are running all versions from 10g to 11204. I have not looked into it enough to tie the behavior to a certain version yet. I am listing output of most of the information that I think is relevant.
