 On 11g you can actually now do live duplicates (no pre-existing-backup needed). I think that's what Jeremiah was referring to. ( http://www.colestock.com/blogs/2008/01/new-in-11g-active-database-duplication.html). I haven't used it yet but it looks nifty.
