RMAN backup pieces put onto Tivoli (TSM) tape library using TDPO can't be restored directly using dsm client in usable format. This is because TDP modifies the header of RMAN backup pieces when it puts onto to tape. I verified this by comparing the a backup piece on disk and same backup piece put onto TSM and restored directly using dsm to some other location on same server. Their sizes were different. In fact mdsum were different as well. And RMAN did not even recognize the directly restored backup pieces.

Unfortunately if you use TDP to backup files, then you have to use TDP itself to restore them. If you are restoring backup from one server onto another server, and you dont have TDP client installed on second (test/dev) machine, then you wont to be able to restore database from tape. This is IBM's way of making money in TDP client licenses on different machines.
