If you have 7 nodes, you can partition them into 3 groups: 2, 2 and 3, each with a shared $ORACLE_HOME. That way, you can bring each partition down for upgrading. If you have a small cluster, I don't see any purpose in having a shared/clustred $ORACLE_HOME.
