Data Guard Apply lag

I have scoured the Metalink and cannot find any relevant assistance.

We are having a horrible DataGuard Apply lag. It seems to be getting worse daily.

Does anyone have any insights or direction to look for giving the standby a kick in the pants? It seems to me that a machine that isn't doing anything shouldn't have any trouble keeping up with production heavy machine.
