        There are usually good rationales, which maybe are not good for Oracle specifically.

        If you want a more conservative approach, you still have the Unices, with which GNU/Linux is interoperable. With MS, you're stuck.

        This is by design. Linus feels the desktop stresses the kernel mores and pushes it further, harder. Feel free to substitute Unix if you think like it: they are all open systems, more or less.
