Wolfgang, which OS are we talking about? If it's Linux, then aio is crappy, except on raw devices. Slowaris is the same, while AIX 5.2 works fine with JFS2. I haven't tried it with HP-UX. It breaks my heart, but I cannot blame Oracle for everything.
