thanks... answers only part of what I wanted to know, which means I
probably formulated the question incorrectly! :) I wanted to know how
they knew the numbers of people in each category as well. If it's from
tax returns...
the problem is, job descriptions/categorizations in IT are subjective, not objective. It's very easy to say "we have so many teachers who teach elementary school, so many who teach high school math, etc". But, as can be seen from some of the questions on this list, we have DBAs who do only design, DBAs who do only production tuning/maintenance, DBAs who are overseeing the entire company's data.... ad infinitum.
We definitely have "computer scientists" (based on this website's definition) here -- Mogens, Anjo, Jonathan, Cary... those are the names that come first to mind, certainly it's not an exhaustive list!
