The formula in the book is just another form of hit ratio IMO.

As Mark suggested, just check the max allocated a few times, or check it historically if you are running statspack.

Set the pga_aggregate_target to that value plus a margin you feel comfortable with, and then monitor and adjust as needed.

9i gives you tools for managing memory that just didn't exist in previous versions.
