Indeed, the row directory is in the block header. And like Raj said, there is a length value to tell you how far to read. The values are encoded in Oracle's internal format, such as the 7 bytes coding for Date type.

Dennis, i dont think those 2 items you mentioned are that encoded, using the dump command you can see how they are stored.
