Good. And I would add... Test on a regular schedule to see if some yahoo has
altered the server or environment and invalidated your recover procedure.

One of my bigger concerns, right up there with asteroids that may strike the earth at any moment, is that no backup can be trusted until it has been tested. Yes, you can use RMAN to back up your database from here forward. But it will be a more complex task, hence more prone to exactly the problem you illustrate. So you shouldn't trust that until you've tested recovery with it. And that will take some time. My recommendation would be:

All -
I am implementing RMAN on my unix boxes. The dbs are already in archivelog mode for about a year. The system admin was backing up the files from cold backups. Today we realize the backups are no good. The tape is unreadable. Most of the archived logs (.arc) files have been removed from the system. Now I have no way to put them back!
How can I set rman to start backing up from today forward? Hoping to get a good backup and dependable from rman.
TIA
