iAS /images/ conflict

Has anyone decided NOT to create virtual hosts in iAS?

We are supposed to add a web-based application to our iAS production server, but it uses an alias named /images/, which is already used by iAS. The developers built their application on an iAS installation that didn't include all the components and now that they are ready to go into production, surprise! conflict exists.

Are there performance hits associated with having virtual server in Apache? What about the administration side?
