I'm right in the middle of doing the same thing. You can install oracle 9.2 with the 8.1.7 database up and running. I have not been successful in using the GUI to upgrade the 8.1.7 database (and the installer will want to upgrade any database that it finds). We are creating a new database in 9.2 --- we don't care about current data (or can easily recreate it).

Hello all,
I'm working on an upgrade, my first major one on Windows (w2k)
The docs I've read aren't specific about when to actually install the software. So here's what I've done:
And then follow the remainder of the directions in this note.
My question is, can I install the software ahead of time, with the databases up and available? Yes, I know, "try it out", I'll try it with the next upgrade test on the next host. But if someone has been there/done that, I would appreciate any pointers.
I'm a moron when it comes to windows. Or should I say I am a MONKEY when it comes to windows
Thanks everyone
Lisa Koivu
