Sorry for the flat-out-copy. I could have just said "RTFM", but I thought the text was short enough and interesting enough to post.
I recently looked into this issue myself, and I too consulted the Oracle 8i Backup and Recovery Handbook, then I checked the 9iR2 docs to see what the latest was.
The only time I've found it useful to backup and restore the online redo logs was during a manual database cloning from one server to another.
