Niall
I think you are correct from an employment point of view. From a vendor's point of view, new sales are everything. It may be nice to have some maintenance revenue rolling in from past years. But when the new sales revenue dries up, jobs are quickly slashed, new development stops, etc.
A good story I heard: Suppose you owned a printing shop with about 10
presses. Suppose each press lasts about 10 years. So you try to replace a
press each year. But this is a tough year with few sales. So you decide
instead of replacing a press to defer that till next year. From the press
manufacturer's point of view, the market just dropped to zero. Then next
year is pretty good, so you decide to catch up and replace two presses. The
press manufacturer's market just shot out of sight. Based on that, I'm glad
to work closer to the end consumer.

I have no idea, I didn't make the point about non-RDBMS products but equating *new* licence revenue with market share. I'd equate *total units licensed* with market share and *new* licence revenue with growth potential.
