It all depends on what the flag is for.
We have a number of fields that handle 3 values ([A]ctive, [D]elete, [I]nvalid). We use a varchar2(1) field for this.

Would you use a number or char for a flag in a table? Would you use a char since it's one byte and a number is 22 bytes?
