I haven't tried it, but at the "New 9i Features for Administrator" class two weeks ago, our instructor said that the External Files just uses SQL*Loader codes which has finally moved into the Oracle kernel. I think his opinion was that the times difference between SQL*Loader and External Tables would be negligible, but I don't think he had actually tested that yet. Of course, the external tables are read-only and you can't create indexes on them. Also, users reading the external table also have to have READ and WRITE rights on the DIRECTORY (READ to read the external file, and WRITE for the BAD and LOG files).
