In addition to other ideas people have suggested, (which are probably better than mine) that is a symptom of RAID 5. It takes longer to do writes but is faster for retrieval. Have your SA's modified the configuration of that mount point? Also, if you are on an HP AutoRAID, when your mount point gets to a certain % full, it can automatically change the RAID configuration.
