How do you get a "low cost" VLDB? How L is VL? What's your hardware
budget? What's going to hit the DB? How often? How many? DW/OLTP/Hybrid?
What's your available planned downtime?
Without knowing these, I've said before on this list that I'd take a strong look at the new Sun systems if you're looking for a comparison to Linux for running Oracle. Supported Solaris for Oracle is free -- Supported Linux for Oracle isn't. And the new Sun hardware starts at $3000 US for a 1Ghz SparcIIIi Cu CPU, .5GB RAM, 36GB disk, and FOUR (4!) Gig Ethernet cards. Head over to:

Of course, this may not work for you as the V210 has a max of only two processors and you'll almost certainly need a SAN for storage. You and yours will have to decide that.
Have fun!
