I was able to accomplish this test with tape backups - OS and RMAN database.
I put my RMAN on a centralized backup server.
It is small and if I have multiple Oracle versions (binaries) then I have to
have the separate binaries on that centralized management server for the
correct catalog (want to go to one version .....but....COTS).
Each night after all RMAN backups using MML to tape, the centralized backup
server is brought down along with RMAN cleanly.
The binaries and RMAN are copied to tape.
On recovery (I did this from Solaris 2.8 to 2.8 and 2.6 (w/ relink)) series of scripts to copy centralized server onto new host.
>From there it is simply a matter of using RMAN and tape library to recovery
all of our databases for this enterprise.
Worked, was fast and reliable. I understand that there maybe issues with upgrades on Oracle binaries on the disaster recovery platform after this approach. However, not a major issue because how many upgrades would you be doing on a disaster recovery platform anyway.
Everything pre-scripted and tested. Also, can quickly have the tapes cloned and offsite pretty far away. We after all leave in the capital city of Florida where little brother Bush also lives.

Veritas prices this by the size of the server. Our sys admin recalls a quote of around 8K, but that was a couple of years ago. And we are using NFS mounts as disk storage, so that is much cheaper than SAN. Not being familiar with an MML, that seemed a little more intimidating.
The other factor was disaster recovery. Our management gave us the criteria "assume all you have is your offsite tape, now verify that you could go to a new server, load what you need to load and then recover the database." We were able to accomplish that with RMAN having written to disk. Maybe that is even easier with an MML writing to a SAN, I wouldn't know.

I wonder why so much?
We're on the West Coast of the U.S. and we're paying about $2500 US for those licences.
