We are assuming that the "data architects" and "logical modellers" actually
now how to normalize, model and have the overall experience to put together
an architecture that is extensible, provides for data integrity, performs
well and don't want to tell you how to implement it as a physical DBA in the
RDBMS of your choice but ask you for the best method. I gave my card to a
few data architects at the conference who can be desribed that way and if
there are any on the list that fit that description not only will I develop
your plan happily, willingly and not in the "glass-house" mindset but very
practically. I will also wash your feet with my hair. If only that was the
case I would be so happy... please tell me those people exist... please give
them my e-mail....

Some of you will know that I was once an economist and so resemble that remark :( In defence I would refer the prosecution to the fact that real science needs both experimenters - to come up with the data, and theoreticians to work out what the hell might be happening - Physics models this especially well.
Actual commercial enterprises don't generally employ theoretical physicists on account of their work being not directly useful to them. Any similarity between this and the distribution of "data architects" or "logical modellers" amongst general commercial enterprises and software/tools companies is purely accidental.

Paula,
For economists ... real economy is always a theoretical model.

While I was away at the IOUG conference our "logical" data admin. group went to Orlando for a big Data Admin. conference. The one thing they said when they got back was: "The only difference between a physical DBA and a data administrator is the physical DBA carries a beeper."
Now I am leaving to soak my head in a vat of Cyanide.
