Joe
Either way you will want to completely install 9i. ;-) If you mean should you upgrade your 8.0.5 database or exp/imp the data into 9i, personally I make the decision based on how large the database is. If it can be exported/imported within the downtime window you are given, that is my first choice. If not, then I upgrade, performing the procedure on the test system first. This upgrade is not a big deal, other than making sure your application, system, etc. are all compatible.

IS it easy to upgrade from Oracle 8.0.5 to 9i or should I just do a complete install of 9i.

It says that you are supposed to commit or rollback before doing parallel
dml on the object.
But you can still get the error since there is a bug in 9.2 which will be
fixed in Oracle 10.
we were hit by this bug and had to request a back port to come with a patch
for 9.2.
The patch is available now for 9.2 Solaris (and probably AIX).

Waleed

here is what it says on OTN. Not sure what it means.
ORA-12838 cannot read/modify an object after modifying it in parallel
Cause: Within the same transaction, an attempt was made to add read or modification statements on a table after it had been modified in parallel or with direct load. This is not permitted.
Action: Rewrite the transaction, or break it up into two transactions: one containing the initial modification and the second containing the parallel modification operation.
INSERT /*+append*/INTO tab1(col1)
SELECT col1
FROM tab2
where col2 in (select col2
from tab2 minus select to_number(col3) from tab1 where col4 <> 'XX')
