I'll echo Jared's comments here. I've basically taught myself RMAN this week - all via the console - and don't regret a minute of it. Don't be scared ... you can start with commands as simple as 'BACKUP DATABASE;' and 'RESTORE DATABASE; RECOVER DATABASE;' and build up from there (at least in 9.x). Another advantage of the console is the status messages provided during backup and recovery ... better than watching spinning wheels or an hour-glass in a GUI!
