  I was thinking of simply copying the datafiles using the OS facilities. If you are putting hot backups to tape directly I am not sure that they will be usable for recovery. RMAN requires a third party media manager to handle backups to tape. If rman can't do it, I am not sure that homegrown scripts can either.
