I think sh expects a shell command script.  Never tried
sending it a binary.
So I just did.
On my Solaris Intel box, it always returns an error :Unexpected '('

Now, when I put my fully qualified sqlplus is a text file say: shsqlplus
The file has the following string:
/opt/oracle/bin/sqlplus

and then do a sh shsqlplus, sqlplus opens fine.

I think your flavor of Linux is a little more aggressive in protecting you against sending binaries to the command interpreter.
Tho one could speculate on some possible interesting results throwing (essentially) random data at the command interpreter.

Hello,

Could someone help me decipher these?

1) "sh: /DB/O92iBase/O9iEE/bin/sqlplus: Permission denied"

2) "sh: /DB/O92iBase/O9iEE/bin/genclntsh: bad interpreter: Permission denied"

Thanks.
