Don't be so sure,
Many people don't want to advance 'right now'. Many would prefer to wait
until later. I was personally pushed into management too early and chose to
leave the company. Demotion would have pretty much destroyed my credibility
at that company, however ( as Patrice said ) if I'd stayed in my old job and
refused the promotion I'd have been written off as an unambitious
underachiever. Employers don't want people who'll settle for what they've
got.
For all of the "I'm a techie and fiercely proud of it" rhetoric that I often
hear very few people (I hope) would choose to close the door on any
possibility of future promotion at their company.
Only an idiot would deny themselves a choice.
