RE: Oracle IFS

Hi Patrice

Document 182850.1 QuickStart Guide to installing 9iFS 9.0.1 recommends 1gig of RAM on a dual pentium 500mhz to support 50 users using all protocols "moderately". This document is dated Apr 5 of this year. So either they fixed it or they are stretching the truth. Can you expand on your experience?

I don't know if Oracle fixed the iFS memory requirements, it used to be brutal.

2G per two protocols with two concurrent sessions, if I remember correctly. That adds up quickly.

I asked during the Oracle Technology Day here, and was told that it still requires a massive amount of memory server-side.

Less than before, but still requires much memory.

I like the idea very much, indexing information like e-mails would prove invaluable in some organizations.

Oracle iFS is, of course, much slower in standard operations, such as file copying, saving and retrieving, but...
It has really great features for searching as well as more protocols to access files (smb, nfs, http, webdav, and more). Another nice feature is customized "smart" file system, where you can program it's behaviors such as presenting the same data in different formats as needed (dxf as bmp or jpg when user don't have dxf viewer, for example). It may be integrated well with Oracle Workflow. iFS implements "out of the box" file versioning and chek-in, check-out.

All backup problems go to database backup. However, it is not so flexible as regular file backups - it's questionable to restore only one file from the past and so on.

Samba is free. iFS is included free of charge in Oracle Server (both EE and SE).

Samba works on *NIX. iFS works on both Windows NT and UNIX/LINUX.

In other words, need a regular file system - go with Samba. ;)
