Good question - I have not worked with a single volume, however, I try to help myself a tad by making fewer redo members than I have disks. Of course I generally use 3 to 5 members per volume and always less than the number of drives per volume. I also generally allow the checkpoints to execute based on redo activity rather timed.

I don't know if this will help your circumstance or not - hopefully.
