Yes you can rename a column in 8i, it just depends to what value your compatibility parameter is set

In Oracle
It's not possible to rename a column.You can instead
use alias for that column name in your queries.
Or you have to create a new table from existing one
Drop existing table.And recreate a table by
selecting from new table.
