RE: Opinions on Performance Tuning SoftwareAhh but when it comes to re-writing SQL, and you don't have a day to try and tune various statements, and you can get a tool to do it for you? Where's the problem there..

My opinion is that tuning tools are there to save the most valuable commodity for a DBA - TIME (apart from coffee and Dilbert!)!! All of these tools are granted - pointy clicky - but if you manage to implement them to your own personal standards, and get them working for YOU, that is where they score!

Now Natasha, from what I have heard from you guys in the field, the general opinion out of the list you have formed there is that Precise would be the best option. They have very minimal overhead on the system, and works extremly well, as they have managed to map the memory structures of UNIX, and collect their data from there. Most other tools log on to Oracle, as a user (SYS mostly) and fire queries to the database.

There are two questions though, what are you trying to acheive with a tool, and how much $$$$ do you have to spend? I have heard Precise is a little costly, but hey if it works that well why not spend the cash? Leave the tool to monitor while you get PROactive!

Here's to tuning without the pointy-clicky stuff. I agree that you don't need a spendy piece of software to do it for you... you just need to know what to look for.

My personal favorites are the top session monitor, otune32 (the utilities   that
can be found on Guy Harrison's web site), sqlplus and vmstat/iostat.   Statspack
  and/or utlbstat/utlestat are also useful.

  Hi gurus

Has anyone had the privilege of test driving Savant Diagnostics, Precise SQL
  and
Oracle Enterprise Manager and formed an opinion of which is the best?

  Gaja don't respond to this : )

  Regards
  Natasha
