RE: DB startup question - PLEASE READ FOR ANSWER!I tried this, but what to I
query v$parameter for. If I try to get the value of ifile it gives me
nothing, am I missing something here?

Actually, that shows you the value of the "ifile=" parameter included in your pfile (if you have such a parameter set), not the init file itself. Of course if it's important to know the name of the init file after the database has been started, then one could put all the values in the ifile, have the pfile include only the "ifile=" parameter, and then query v$parameter to see the ifile.
