One DBA; 14 production databases, or databases given production level support; about 14
non-production databases, Those Peoplesoft upgrades are murder! I am not the Peoplesoft administrator. I used to do all the designer/developer work as well. I am currently training someone to share these duties, but he's the best applications programmer we have, and gets pulled off to other products with my blessing.

I do not work more than 40 hours per week on average. There are the occasional bad stretches.

appox 110 production databases and about 25 development/test databases on about 60 unix servers

10 Logical Database Design/Data Administration DBA 2 Physical Design DBAs
6 Systems administrators

Almost all applications are designed and developed in-house.

Hi Cherie,

Here we have 3 dedicated db hosts, 4 databases. 1 DBA, 1 SA, plus one person who can back both of us up.

I hope this helps you. I know your numbers are a complete nightmare.

Is there any sort of rule-of-thumb for how many database that a DBA should be expected to support? I realize that the answer would vary based on size of databases, stability, production vs. development, mission critical, 24/7, etc.

But in general, how many databases would you think a DBA should be supporting if you divide the total number of databases in an organization by the number of DBAs supporting them?

How many databases do you support on average? What is the size of your team?

Trying to get ideas for the head count of our DBA team here and wondering what the industry standard is.

Thanks

Cherie
