Strange. Admittedly I don't currently have access to an HP or AIX box. I
have worked with HPUX, and figured that the file command would tell you all
the details about the file in question. Perhaps if you checked the manpage
for file you would see a switch that would help you. Alternatively it seems
that if you have the 64 bit version, Oracle goes out of the way to let you
know with messages in SQL*Plus, v$version and possibly more places.
