Actually, he does. The application he's developed mimics a spreadsheet using a browser. Since I originally posted the question, I've learned that he 'had to store everything as character' because the rows of the table include the records he uses for the 'web-spreadsheet' headings as well as the data.
I predict this is going to be a huge pain-in-the-tail app to maintain once people start using it. The worst part is that everytime something errors-out or doesn't work as planned, he comes to me and says 'Is there something wrong with Oracle?'.
Make some room on that soap-box for me.
